Take the 26 Day Challenge

An estimated 1 billion people live in urban slums globally. Do Americans understand what life is like for those that live in slums around the world? Carolina For Kibera would like to help everyone try.
In conjunction with the celebration of Carolina for Kibera’s 10th Anniversary this year, the nonprofit organization created a 26 Day Challenge in order to give people a glimpse of the daily joys and challenges faced by those that live in the slum of Kibera, Kenya. Today marks the release of a new challenge called Kibera for a Day in which participants can create their own custom challenge to complete in a 24-hour period.
For the full 26 Day Challenge, each day participants are given a different task to complete that mirrors daily life in Kibera, one of East Africa’s largest slums. Ranging from using only a small bucket of water for the day to sharing a cup of chai with friends, each item of the challenge brings participants closer to understanding poverty, community and how people experience survival and well-being in urban slums.
For those short on time, the new Kibera for a Day challenge is a unique 24-hour experience in which participants choose 3 out of the 26 challenge items to complete in one day. Challenge takers are encouraged to discuss their experiences on the Power of 26 website and on social media, reflecting on how the challenge changed their perspective on poverty and what they will do to take action. Understanding poverty is the first step towards its alleviation.
