We are pleased to announce that Dr. John Deasy has been named the new president of the Bezos Family Foundation. Jackie and Mike Bezos, co-founders of the Bezos Family Foundation who have served more than 20 years as president and vice-president, will transition to co-chairs of the Board of Directors.
Deasy brings more than 40 years of experience in public education and public service to the role, including leading K-12 education systems and advising education leaders. Known for his relentless commitment to equity and justice for all students, Deasy has a proven track record in propelling student achievement and increasing access to high-quality educational experiences. Most recently, John served as a partner at Cambiar Education and was a partner and co-founder of Rethinc.
“Jackie and I are excited to welcome John as the Foundation’s next leader,” said Mike Bezos. “John has spent his career working tirelessly on behalf of young people and communities across the U.S. Most importantly, he models our values of partnership, collaboration, deep listening and an unwavering passion for helping all babies, children and youth reach their full potential. We firmly believe that John has the experience and skills to advance the Foundation’s mission, and we look forward to working with him.”
Earlier in his career, Deasy served as the Deputy Director of Education with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and has held numerous superintendent positions, including at Stockton Unified School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Prince George’s County Public Schools.
“I am deeply honored to have the privilege to serve as the Bezos Family Foundation’s next president,” said Deasy. “The Foundation has been a true champion for kids and families for more than two decades, starting in the earliest years of a child’s life and throughout adolescence. Mike and Jackie believe in the power of young people and lead with hope and optimism, and I look forward to continuing that work with them, alongside the board, the staff and our many incredible nonprofit partners."
Deasy is a Pahara Fellow and he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Providence College and a Doctorate from The University of Louisville in Kentucky.
During this transition period, Deasy will be fully immersed in the organization, including spending time with Mike and Jackie and our board, staff and partners to gain in-depth understanding of the Foundation’s mission and priorities.
